About Us

Our mission is to promote the welfare of companion animals in our community, reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs, providing education and resources to prevent abandonment and neglect of pets, and to shelter and care for them until they find their new homes.

Shoshone Pet Rescue (SPR) is a non-profit organization that started its roots in the early 1990's with the efforts of Karin Clark-Reed. She began adopting dogs out of the Kellogg Pound to save them from euthanasia. Later, in 1994, another woman named Betsy Beresford began fostering dogs from the Kootenai Humane Society for the Second Chance Pet Rescue. It was a chance encounter over a homeless cattle dog named "Annie" that Karin and Betsy would meet. Soon after meeting Karin and Betsy began arranging for dogs that were never claimed from the pound to be adopted. They started working with the local police department, and by doing this they were able to keep dogs in the pound for a longer period of time. This gave them the chance to find them suitable homes. Once Karin and Betsy established a good relationship with the city, and a way to keep the dogs from being euthanized; they began having every dog spayed or neutered, and they started charging an adoption fee to cover the costs. Initially, Karin and Betsy were working solely to save the animals who were to be euthanized, and it has since evolved into the rescue it is today. In the years that Shoshone Pet Rescue has operated in Shoshone County, Idaho, we have successfully placed over 1400 (and counting) pets into permanent, loving homes.

Today the dedicated members of the Shoshone Pet Rescue continue the work begun by Karin and Betsy. Every animal brought into the Kellogg Pound is cared for by volunteers who clean the kennels, feed and water, and walk the dogs 2 times a day, 7 days a week, rain or shine. We proudly continue to save the pets in our area, and we will continue to do so for as long as they need us.

If you are looking for a new best friend chances are they are waiting for you right here.

Adoption Information

Please submit an adoption application with the name of the pet you are interested in adopting (located at the top of the page). We will review all applicants, and then the home that best fits their needs will be chosen.

The adoption fee, starting at $100, covers the cost of the veterinary services including shots, microchip, and spay or neutering. If the animal you adopt has not yet been spayed or neutered by our veterinarian you can choose to have it done by your own. Upon providing us proof of the procedure we will return a portion of the adoption fee to you. This also applies to those who wish to use our veterinarian to have their newly adopted pet spayed or neutered.
